Vote. Breathe. Find the good: Three ways to be okay with the future, whoever wins.

As a psychologist and personal coach who often assigns “news vacations” to clients, I am ashamed to admit that I’ve needed one for a while, and yet I haven’t taken one. The truth is, I’ve gotten caught up. Whereas morning rituals of the past involved a steaming cup of coffee and taking a peaceful 15 minutes to mindfully enjoy its nuances, this past year, and particularly these past six months, my oversized unicorn mug (which says “f**king magical”, by the way) sits, cooling and underappreciated, while I read headlines, articles, and poll stats, and...

Happy thanks giving: starting a gratitude practice

I can’t believe I let this happen again. It’s been nearly another year since my last blog post. And yet, what I find most disturbing is not that I haven’t blogged in so long, but that the year is almost over. I’ve only just gotten used to writing the five in “2015”, and in just a few short weeks, I have to start getting used to a six. They say that time moving faster is a sign of getting older, but I have several young clients  (by young I mean college-aged) and these kids are telling me that they’re finding that time is moving at an unsettling pace...

How to make a BIG life change: Step Three- LEAP!

Okay, so before we go any further, why not relax and cuddle up with a little (hopefully inspiring, and not terrifying) personal story?  Here is where I talk about my Tarzan Jump.   And what it means to commit to a leap. . . literally. If someone had told me a couple of years back that I would have willingly “Tarzan Jump(ed)” into a 150 foot free fall so that I could swing back and forth across the verdant and glorious canopy of the Costa Rican rainforest, I would have told them that they were certifiably crazy.  But, in 2012, I did just that. Admittedly, a percentage of my...

Lifespan Integration therapy

For several years now, I have been wanting to add something into my practice that would offer my clients an opportunity to gently process and heal trauma and long standing wounds.  While I have gone toward various techniques and modalities in my time as a practicing psychologist, there were always pros and cons, and one of the biggest for me was the concern about clients experiencing “abreaction”, or a retriggering of their traumas, through doing the reprocessing work.  This possibility always made it less appealing for me to move toward that kind of work, despite the value of...

And have you been ten times dazzled yet today?

And have you been ten times dazzled yet today?

Greetings, dear ones. Check it out– a blog post mere days after the last.  Hurrah! My daily walks are typically in the morning, but yesterday, in the afternoon–still very much the sweaty part of the day in Tucson’s October– I felt the sudden need to go outside and walk slowly around the neighborhood. I just needed to stop what I was doing that very moment (feeling full of gratitude that I often have the freedom to do so) and get myself out into the air.  Something was supposed to be seen, to be found. I just felt it– that knowing, coursing through me. Though...

An autumnal offering

Okay, so I’m a little late on ushering in the new season.  Just under a month.  But!  At least it hasn’t been a whole year since my last blog post.  And how is your leaping going, by the way? I’m taking just a little moment here to talk about what it means to allow ourselves– bodies, minds, hearts, spirits– to move into this new season.  Summer is a season of activity, of movement.  It is a more masculine, a more yang time.  A time of drive, of feeling that thrust, if you will, that moves us forward into our days; the sun, rising earlier and setting later and...
